The wastewater has left your home, entered our collection system, and been conveyed to the treatment plant. Now it is time to clean the water.
What is wastewater treatment? It is the process of cleaning used water so that it can be returned safely to our environment. Mother Nature cleans and purifies water as it runs down creeks and streams, dropping solid particles out onto the streambed, putting oxygen into it by bouncing off of rocks, and by allowing time for tiny organisms to use impurities as their food. This natural method worked well for centuries until there were more people and waste than nature could handle.
A sewer treatment plant actually works to clean water in the same way. It does
the same work only in a condensed time and space interval. While there are different
types of treatment plants, the goals are the same: allow the solid particles
to drop out, remove many of the impurities, replace the oxygen which the bacteria
have used, and destroy the harmful bacteria.
